Usually, they will give you a portion of it the first day, and then the rest the next day. The thing is, when dealing with personal and not payroll checks, some banks will hold them longer. May be up to 2 weeks to verify that it actually cleared your grandma's bank. Most likely, it will be 1 to 5 business days. If that check were drawn on a national bank (like BofA etc) you could have gone to one of their branches in your town and cashed it.

Your bank has to punch in the information from G-ma's checking acct. That info gets transmitted to gmas bank. G-mas bank receives her check info...removes $$ from her acct...transmits the "ok" for your bank to put the $$ into your acct. This can take approx 5 business days. Nice of her to send you cash! I always loved cash for Christmas!!! :0) (back in my youth...it took MUCH longer, as nothing was computerized!! )
