How do I flag my SSN?

Is there a way to red flag your credit if you think someone has gotten hold of your SSN #???

  • i lost a piece of mail that had all of my information (name, DOB, drivers license #, and SSN #) on it and i don't want it to fall into the wrong hands! what should i do to protect myself from identity theft??

  • Answer:

Actually, you only need to contact one credit bureau and place a fraud alert. They in turn will notify the other credit bureaus to put on a fraud alert. This is required by the FCRA when placing a fraud alert.

You can contact the three credit bureaus and either freeze your credit (this does not allow anyone to pull your credit) or you can put a fraud alert on your credit (this means that before credit can be issued you must first be contacted). You can contact them at the following numbers; 1. Equifax 1-800-685-1111. 2. Experian 1-888-397-3742. 3. Transunion 1-800-916-8800.

In addition to reporting to the police, place a "fraud alert" with the 3 major credit bureaus (Equifax,Experian,TransUnion).

Yes contact all 3 bureaus and do a "fraud alert" also stop all new accounts from being established, without a password or a phone call directly to you at a certain number. When somebody pulls your credit it will show possible identity theft and they wont open credit. Call all 3 agencies and tell them. They will stop your credit from 1 either being pulled without your authorization or 2 make sure when it is pulled the people know what is going on. Normally this virtually stop anybody from using you SSN for credit. Good Luck. Trans Union 866.887.2673 www.transunion.com Experian 888.397.3742 www.experian.com Equifax 800.685.1111 www.equifax.com

Answers about a "fraud alert" are good, but that may not be enough. Also place a "security freeze" on your credit file.

You should absolutely report the loss/theft to the police. You can also contact your bank, and the credit agencies (Equifax, Experian and Transunion) to let them know you suspect your information has been compromised. They can put a note on your credit report that you are potentiall an identity theft victim. Anyone pulling your credit report will see this. Typically, if a company sees such a note upon pulling your report, they will require additional identity confirmation before issuing any credit or loans. Good luck!

yes, you have to call the three credit bureaus and they will put a identity theft red flag on your credit reports so that if anyone tries to get credit....they will contact you before they release your information. I would also call your local social security office and see what they think. when my spouse was on a red cross mission once, he had his wallet stolen so he did the red flag thing. They had tried to use his credit card and debit card but we had cancelled them just in time. I know it works because then he went to change cell phone providers and he was denied because they could not pull his credit report due to the red flag. I think he coudl have done it if a manager had been around but the girl was thrown for a loop. So I did it in my name for him. But his reports still read something to the effect that he has that flag on there.
