How can I remove a paid/closed tax lien from my credit report?
-
Had a tax lien that was paid off and closed, still appears on my credit report. I hear they stay there for seven years, but I also read you can request to have it removed. Any ideas? Def do NOT want to use a credit services company or website they are all scams.

Answer:
If it was a federal tax lien .. Almost one year ago the IRS announced a new policy that once a tax lien is paid it can be removed from the persons credit report. While it can be removed the IRS 'typically' won't do it on their own without the person requesting that it to be removed. You should have received a Certificate of Release of Federal Tax Lien, if you hadn't you should request it. Then fill out the 12277 form (see first link in the source box for the IRS form) , send that form along with your certificate of release of lien and a request to have the lien removed from your reports. Be sure to send it to the correct IRS office for the state that you live in. (see second link in source box) Send it addressed to the Technical Services Advisory Group Manager at the correct IRS address for your state. You might also go to the free site I've also listed in the source box. Go to the Credit Forum and look in the sticky section (located at the top of the page) for the thread about the new IRS policy and removing paid tax liens. The site is free to read, free to use any info in it and free to ask any questions that you may have. In that thread you'll find more detailed info, including a sample letter template to use in dealing with the IRS, etc, etc. Removal won't happen overnight, since you're dealing with the government lol, but it should only take a month or two.

The only entity that can remove a tax lien is the IRS or state revenue. Whomever you owed. You would have to call them and ask how or if this is even possible. I highly doubt it is though as there is no incentive for them to remove it once it is paid..and even if it weren't they ARE the IRS. LOL

you read wrong - you probably read an ad posted by one of those scam companies You cannot erase anything that is legit - you just have to wait for it to fall off after 7.5 yrs or so

Only Errors or lies can be removed. True Statements cannot. if removal was that easy then the credit reports would be useless.

There is no way you can have it removed. As long as it shows a zero balance, that should be your only concern
Stan
History cannot be erased or removed.
