Using a Visa gift card in iTunes?

I bought a Visa gift card today to purchase a few things online. I had $4 and change left on it so I entered the card number into iTunes to buy a few songs. However, it's still letting me purchase songs even though I know I'm over the limit on the card. What is going on? Does iTunes recognize the Visa gift card like someone's credit card? I'm scared! :(
