How to do a credit check?

Hi, my family is in the process of finding a new home and we've sent out some applications. The owners of the place we really like said they want us to do the Credit Check because they aren't sure how to do it. I think they said you have to have a business or something to do it or do it on yourself. I don't know how to do it either so I'm a little lost. We have to be out of our home in the middle of January so we're running out of time and we don't want to miss this great place because I can't do the credit check. I googled some websites but you have to pay for it and I don't have the money for it and I don't have a credit card anymore. Can someone please help me out by giving me a website or something?
