How do you have to be to get a credit or debit card and how does it work?

• I wanted to know if my 12 year old son could get a debit or credit car. I prefer a debit for him. If he can't get one at his age are there special cards for him. I want him to keep a debit card in his wallet and use it when he needs it. An other thing do you need to pay for a debit/check card. Does it deduct from what you have in your account. Also whats a prepaid credit or debit card?
