How to build a phone?

How long does it take to build good credit with a credit card and cell phone bill?

  • In January 2009 I got approved for my first credit card through chase with a $800 limit. I also got a cell phone through Verizon the same month. I have made one payment on both so far. I have applied to get two other credit cards but got denied through American Express and another company. I have been wanting to buy a motorcycle but I did not want to have to put a large down payment. So I was going to wait until my credit was build up enough to get one. How long will it take?

  • Answer:

Normally it would take you a minimum of six months (good credit standing, meaning you haven't missed any payments for your cards ) to build a good credit rating specially if you just started building your credit score. and just to add, every time you apply for a credit your credit rating goes down so it's also not advisable for you to keep on applying for a credit card, it's better to wait 6 months instead. I work for Chase as a Risk Management Analyst (Fraud Dept.) that's why I know.

Verizon is not gonna help, they only report when you stop paying them. Getting a credit card is a good start, but you'll need to give it a year or so before your credit score really gets up there. Also, wait a couple months before applying for other cc's.

Your cell phone doesn't report to the credit bureaus unless you default and the account is turned to collections. Stop applying for more credit cards. You will be turned down for all of them and every application will take another bite out of your score. Your existing new credit card account won't even count in your score till the 6 month point. Even then you won't have enough credit history to qualify for more credit cards. Use your new credit card and pay it in full every month. That's the best way to build a good credit history and avoid paying interest. In a year, you can consider applying for another credit card. But you really need a minimum 2 year good payment history to get decent credit. Really good credit is build over a very long time.

It is going to take a while.... You made one horrible mistake: Never apply for more than one credit card in a 6 month period. You just got one... and immediately after that you applied for two more. Now you have 2 more hard inquiries within a month after your first credit card approval. That will ding your score and of course you got denied for the 2 other cards. Use your only existing credit card to build your credit score up again. That means no more than $80 a month in charges that you pay off immediately when the bill comes. Do this for a year and then get your credit report again. The Verizon cell phone contract will not show up on your credit at all. It does not count towards your credit score and does not report your payments to the credit bureaus. About the only time it will ever show up is when you fail to pay them and end up with a delinquent account that went into collection.

i think every six months the credit card company is evaluating your credit standing then if you are qualified to increase the credit lines they will inform you or you can see in your next statement.

It takes a while, wow.. I'm on the same page as you wanting to build up my credit for a motorcycle since my parents will not co-sign, and I talked to the dealer about financing at a shop and he said large loans help alot and having your own cell phone does too but the easiest and fastest way would be find a co-signer with good credit. The guy also said at the kawasaki shop that his son could walk in and get anything he wanted without a co signer cause he payed off a vehichle and he was 21. Also, whenever someone wants to buy something charge it on your card and take there cash and pay off the credit card with it and don't get yourself in dept you cant get out of because it's alot easier then you think and theres so many people having problems with it now that it's hard to finance.
