How To Make Your Own Match Attax Card?

Why am I asked to enter my name "exactly as it appears on card" when making a credit card purchase online?

  • I have asked this question before and was given the following two answers: 1. The purchase is denied if the name doesn't match the card. The merchant wants to verify the card. If they accept teh card and the card owner dispute the charge, the merchant gets backcharged. Some sites are much more cautious than others. Probably because they got burned with backcharges. -submitted by user "bdancer222' 2. A 3rd grader could figure this out....it for fraud protection. If you stole the number you may not have the exact spelling on the card. -submitted by user 'Common Sense' HOWEVER, it is obvious that neither of these people are competent enough to understand what I am asking, because I clearly stated in my original question that: a) I make purchases online all the time; b) I often use someone else's credit card (with their permission of course!); c) I always enter my OWN name in the "Card Holder's Name" field; and d) my transactions are always approved. So fraud prevention/detection and/or trying to minimize disputes cannot be the reason. Being that I'm not yet a third-grader, I still can't figure this out. If there is someone out there that has completed third grade and can help shed some light on this issue I would greatly appreciate it!

Well apparently you're much smarter than the rest of us. Or maybe the sites you are using are just not concerned with verifying the cardholder name. If you shop online all the time using someone else's card, use your name, and it works, what difference does it make? I only shop occasionally online and don't have to borrow someone's credit card since I am old enough and have sufficient credit to have several different cards. If I leave out my middle initial, the transaction is rejected since the name doesn't match the card. Also, I checked your previous question and you indicated that sometimes the transaction was denied to the name not matching the card. Pretty much proves that matching the name is a security feature.

Websites verify card numbers in various different ways. Some only verify that the number is legitimate (not stolen, expired or full). Some verify both that the number is legit AND the name matches. Still others verify that the number is legit, the name matches, AND the address matches the billing address. Some verify the 3 or 4-digit extra number on the back, others don't. The more verifications, the better the security.
