What tasks can a company give an intern before it is exploitation?
-
I have recently started an internship with a local minor league baseball team. I am a sport management major, but since I have been with the organization (one week) with the exception of one day I have only been doing tasks like leaf blowing (2 days), scraping the top of the dugouts, cleaning bathrooms, placing out trashcans, sweeping the stadium, etc. I am beginning to feel like I am being taken advantage of. This seems like tasks hourly wage workers should have. Don't get me wrong I am expecting to have to do some dirty work but I am not learning anything associated with my major. I thought that was the whole point of doing an internship. I would like people who have experienced an internship to answer please. Tell me your major and what your internship experience was like. Thanks.

But isn't part of what you doing part of sports management? Just only one week? Man, what a whino!!!! The way I see it, you're learning what it takes to run a stadium. Give it a few weeks. By week 4 and you're still doing the same, then Ieave. However, maybe your attitude is why you're doing that job? If you're not smart enough or you don't show what it takes or not apprecitive, they'll give you crappy work.
Thermo Engineering........I had to change all the shower heads in the entire Siemens complex and then propose a cost savings........... It appears to me you need to find something that fits your perceived place in the organization.......perhaps you wanted to start at the top and work your way down............sorry.........start at the bottom like the rest of us or start buying lotto tickets.......... You think your worth more than the hourly workers........well.........your not..............wake up..........and learn........without complaining........

Those seem like usual tasks of interns. Of course, you should really put yourself out there and get involved in a project, but for what time you aren't working on a project, these are the tasks that I would expect for you to do. I would use one of your tasks and think of a better way for it to be done. Then, ask your boss.... "I've been thinking about taking care of the facilities here and I think that we should start a ......[fill in the blank]." Get yourself a task and do it. Opportunities do not fall into your lap. I think becuase they are giving you these tasks that you aren't fully taking advantage of the oppertunities out there that you can get involved with.
