How do you get a domain name and who owns it officially?

  • So I'm wondering, where can I go and buy a domain name such as... www.testdomain.com? I've seen several sites that offer domain name hosting, but how does that work? How can there NOT be duplicates if there are tons of companies allowing you to purchase domain names? Can someone clarify how domains work? (I know the redirecting part and IP, but I don't understand how does it become universal) Additional Details And how do they have access to creating domain names? Who do they turn to when wanting to create a domain name for their customers?

There are NO duplicates in the Domain Name System (DNS). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System Registries "own" the different Top Level Domains (TLDs).Some of these TLDs - like .COM/.NET/.INFO - are gTLDs and are open for any registration use by anyone.Then there are other TLDs - like .AERO/.MUSEUM/.TRAVEL/.JOBS which are restricted or sponsored use sTLDs and others which are country code TLDs (ccTLDs) which may be open to International registrations or may have country specific residential/nexus requirements. The registrars sell you the domain name on a "lease" of usually a minimum one year period.The registrars take their cut on the lease price and pay the TLD registry. So,for example,Yahoo.com or Google.com are not "owned" by Yahoo or Google but by the .COM registry and like every other domain name "owner" they have to keep up their domain registration term "lease" payments to their registrar. ICANN creates a central database of domain names. A variety of registrars are authorized to connect to the ICANN database and register domain names.

(.com for example) A company (VeriSign) operates .com, they keep the database and anyone that sells .coms buys them from VeriSign which does not allow duplicates. But you can't just buy one, there like a wholesaler and every extension works about the same way (.net .info .org). ICANN is an accreditation organization, they come up with the guidelines that the wholesalers and retailers go by. So the retail domain sites (where you can buy just one) go to ICANN to become accredited that they are following the guidelines and to VeriSign to have access to the database and be able to sell .com domain names. And to each company of the domain extensions that they wish to offer (Afilias for .info for example), which is a real expensive process (they need to pay for access to the database AND for each domain registered). I use http://www.newinternetdomains.com for all of my domain registrations because their relationships with wholesalers allow them great prices and they give you total control over your domain name and it's entrys in the database.
