What would you pay an employee if this was his job?
-
I have been working in the shipping department for a new aerospace company for the last one and a half years. With this job I am responsible for International Hazardous Material shipments, International palletized Government shipments, many containing millions of dollars in equipment, and also meeting serious fiscal related deadlines. (Besides all the other everyday in country shipments) The company is about 400 to 450 people strong and it is only my boss my coworker and myself in shipping (3 of us). In the past year and a half the paperwork side of the job has increased greatly as well as many other regulations. And to top it all off, I've been bending over backwards to make sure everything gets where it needs to be no questions asked. What do you think this kind of work is worth?

Go to the Occupational Index Guide in the Library look up each of the jobs you do including Hazardous Waste Management, shipping etc. Take the average of the wages. It will vary depending on WHERE you are. Where I live starting pay would be near 15 dollars an hour here and be very near 25 depending on the responsibility of the bookwork.

Its worth whatever wage you accepted for the opportunity to learn this work. Have you had performance reviews? What is the pay range for the job description you have? How do you stack up? Your HR Dept. should be able to discuss this with you. I see a lot of shipping departments in the eastern US and its not a job thats going to make you wealthy. I don't handle aerospace equipment but a lot of cabinet work, Restaurant and grocery equipment, freezers and icemakers, grilles and ovens, custom salad bars, stainless sinks and tables. Most all of it requires special handling of some kind (although its not hazmet),pads and straps, custom built pallets, and everyone has a paperwork monster to manage. To be honest....most of the people I see are managed by one or two people who make a fair wage while the people in the trenches are considered unskilled and make $8-$10 an hour.
