Is it better to incorporate my nonprofit or not?

Where can I incorporate if I am under 18?

  • Hello, I live in Canada and would like to incorporate a business; however, I am under 18. The business is an online-based business. My questions are: 1. Can I legally incorporate a company in Quebec if I am not major? 2. If not, can I incorporate in another country (e.g. some US states which do not require a minimum age for incorporation, or another country) if I operate on the web? Are there any tax-related advantages or disadvantages to incorporating in another country than the one I live in?

  • Answer:

You need to consult an attorney. In most parts of the world, people under 18 can't sign a legally binding contract. This of course limits your ability to conduct business. This can often be waived if you've been legally emancipated from your parents, or join the military, or are over 16 and have been a ward of the state. All great options. Choose your favorite and run with it.

Louis, I don't have the answer to your legal questions (I don't think you can sign a binding contract without your parents help) but I think it's awesome that you're applying yourself the way you are and not just looking to get by working at some dead end job at Starbucks like Kels is. All I can say is do all the research that you can while you are still under 18 and get ready to get after it once you turn 18. Sounds like you're already off to a great start. Good luck.
