The term used is normally a cooperative rather than a cooperation. Basically it is a business set up for the benefit of the customers, where theoretically there is no "fat-cat" getting rich at the top, a code of ethics is applied to how it is run and normally the prices are low. Historically cooperatives were formed in poorer areas and were ethically based upon socialist principles.
