How much does music licensing cost?

Why is it that songs cost money but music videos are free?

I don't get it. A good music video will cost thousands of more dollars than a good song. You would think they would make the music free, and if you want to see the music video it would cost money, but that's not how it works. I mean you can pay for music videos on iTunes, and it is more money than songs, BUT companies often put music videos for free on YouTube putting ads on them, while if someone posts a song that doesn't have a music video on YouTube the company who owns it will telll YouTube to take it down. WHY?
