How Do I put the following on a resume?

How and where in my resume do I put my Volunter experience?

  • I have work experience, internship experience. Recently I started volunteering in two organizations, Where do I write this and under which subtitle? I have a subtitle that is "Additional skills" that contains my computer knowledge, languages, etc. Then, where do I put Volunteer experience and how do i write it? Foor reference, my resume follows the following order; -Focus -Objective -Education -Related Experience -Additional Skills (spanish, Microsoft office, etc) Thanks for your help!

  • Answer:

Why not create another heading for your volunteer experience called "community service" and list your jobs there? Or you can list the volunteer roles you have under "related experience" if they are, in fact, building the skills you are using for the job you are applying for. I've interviewed a couple dozen people in the last few years. Many don't understand that what they are doing and learning in their volunteer roles can be very valuable skills or highly relevant to aspects of they job for which they are applying. They volunteer because they think "it looks good" but it can really improve your skills and make you a better candidate in your next interview. If you get interview questions like "tell me about a time you handled a difficult customer... or delivered critical feedback... or... went above and beyond the requirements" don't hesitate to call on your volunteer experience to answer those questions.
