Will an employer contact me if they DON'T want to hire me?
-
I had a job interview last Thursday and I thought it went super well. I thought I really connected with the managers I talked to and they seemed very interested. When I was finished, they gave me an application to fill out and I completed it and returned it a few hours later. It's Tuesday now and I haven't heard back from them. I know I'm a little impatient, and I should probably wait a week, but I was just wondering; In general, will an employer contact you if they don't want to hire you? You know, just to say "Hey, we're sorry, but you're not what we're looking for." I would rather get that than no call at all! I don't want to call this early, but I did send an e-mail telling them I could start earlier than I said on my application (my new apartment is letting me move early), and no one replied to that. Every other interview I've ever had I was pretty much hired on the spot, so I'm not quite sure what to expect right now.

Answer:
Years ago companies would send out a letter to inform you. Today things are different. If your really curious then I suggest you call them. Why hope and wait. Just give them a call and say your following up. You may be surprised.

Very rarely, give it like 3-4 days since the interview and then just call. Don't ask if you got the job or not, just ask to talk to the person that interviewed you and just tell them you wanted to follow up and thank them for the interview. They will probably tell you one way or the other at that point.

I have had dozens of places not call if they aren't going to hire me. On the other hand I've seen companies take months to decide on a new hire. Sometimes a company thinks that it is time to get more help and then discover they can't afford another employee after all. Patience is needed and don't stop looking for a job just because an interview went well at one place.

It's very doubtful they'd contact you if they weren't interested. From an employer's point of view, why waste the time and effort? Hiring decisions typically have to go through a series of managers. During the summer, this often takes longer because it only takes one to be on vacation for all hiring to come to complete halt. I know it's of little consolation, but hang in there. Gently nudge them by Thursday or Friday to show your interest. But whatever you do, don't make a pest of yourself. That kind of behavior will turn them off. HTH!

No, they are not going to take the time to contact you and tell you that you didn't get the job by phone, they may sent you a letter telling you that the position was filled by someone else who has more experience

Employers face hundreds of prospects but they do usually send a letter or an email if you have failed to get the job. It's just common courtesy, at least for high end employers. You could do a follow up call to the Employment Manager to query the opportunity but don't make it sound like you are desperate or complaining. Some pressure tactics like, "I've got a few other good interviews lined up and I'd rather work for your company as it suits my priorities, so if you could give me a hint I'd appreciate it" sort of thing do work but also backfire if you call too soon. allow 4 days before you call.
