What is a good idea for for asking someone to donate property for a Non profit organization?
-
I have a small not for profit organization, but we are at the moment meeting in a community room of a complex. There is some open property/ a small building and small apartments that I see great potential in that is across from where we meet, that would be an excellent place for my Organization, I'm wondering if maybe the owner would donate it and file it as a tax deduction, but it has a real estate sign up saying that it's for sale. Can the real estate company help me with this or should I contact the owner on my own?

Answer:
Now that it has been placed in a realtors hand, you must go through them because the owner signed a contract with the realtor.............They may have a 3 month to a 6 month contract....Talk to the realtor to see the length of it......And don't forget, it could be sold........

Contacting the owner would be the best way to go. But unless he/she is very wealthy and in a high tax category chances are they will have little interest in giving it away. Maybe attempting to get a low rent/lease might work

You can ask, but I am afraid that they will laugh at you. They would have to be very rich and very eccentric to go along with your idea. Sorry, really really sorry.

I would talk with the owner personally. The realtor isn't likely to help you out too much since it could mean no comission for them. Be prepared to give as much information as you can to the owner about your organization. Also, do your research on the owner so you know as much about them as possible. It will make your first interaction go much more smoothly if you show that you know your stuff.

You can ask for the property. They only can say yes or no. You may be better off asking if you can meet there until the property is sold. Take a grant writing course. Lots of money available for non-profits.
