Why do cars require gas?

Is regular gas ok for high end cars that require premium gas?

  • Answer:

I like the way the people whom have said its harmful have got a thumbs down. At the end of the day you can run the car on the lower fuel for ever and have no problems but its the same with anything in life you can but with anything there is a risk. I may get a thumbs down but who cares ,yes you will save some money and yes the ecu will reset itself to the lower fuel, but if the manual says it needs the higher fuel then it does, its the fuel the car was made for and was tested on. Are the people who said it will be fine willing to pay for major repairs which may come about from using the wrong fuel. I can only speak through experience and i did the same thing by adding the lower fuel than the book said to say a few pennies but it caused lots of problems with my car at the time, and i know of others whom have had similar stories. So the risk is yours it may be fine or it may not, but myself would go with what the book says for that car.The best theory is you may save some money on fuel and have no problems or you may have some big problems and need lots more than the pennies you have saved.

If the engine is not turbo, and it is fairly recent (had engine knock sensor), yes you can use regular gas. The engine will automatically retard the timing to prevent engine knock (the reason for premium gas). You will notice lack of power - especially in hot day, heavy load, going uphill, etc. Good Luck...

My hubby has a Honda Prelude and puts regular gas, but you're supposed to put premium. It runs well, just not as fast. It's an old car with no problems, so I'm sure it's fine. Read the owner's manual just in case.

Most cars now have knock sensors that would prevent it from causing any damage, but it will reduce the power of the engine. I'm not sure if it would be worth it or not, honestly, but it shouldn't hurt it.

Only if you want to permanently damage it. Premium gas has a higher octane rating which helps prevent detonation (knocking or pinging) inside the cylinder.

Yes, you can run the car on regular unleaded gas. It will not have the performance that it would with premium. The engine is protected with one or more knock sensors that will retard the ignition timing prevent knocking. The ECU will check ever so often to test how much ignition advance it can add. So when you do put high octane fuel back in the car, it will take a few miles before the performance is back to normal. I have run 87 octane in a Porsche when I couldn't get Premium which has a compression ratio of 11.5 to 1 which is much higher than most every engine out there. I didn't do it all the time, but it didn't knock or ping and that is on the verge of damaging the engine by detonation. Detonation will absolutely damage the engine. So if you experience knocking or pinging, back off the throttle until it is not making the noise. You should be ok.

i have an 2001 eclipse gt and it takes premium gas i would never put regular in it b/c it would degrade engine performance over time

no. your car will run really bad like an old car much sooner than it should if u use reg. gas in it.

Mr.Jim Lahey

if you had the "money" to buy the car, you need to suck it up and put the damn expensive gas in it. you'll ruin it.

you're lucky I'm nice

No only use correct grade of petrol . Reason is that each engine has been tuned for best performance on each type of fuel. useing wrong fuel affects performance and life of engine. Good luck
