What is the biggest camper on the market?

Why can't Volkswagen start manufacturing the extremerly popular VW camper van of the 1960s and 70s?

  • The traditional VW camper van is probably one of the most sought after vehicles in the world. In this case there is still a huge market for it. Now I understand in most European countries and the USA it would fail emission standards and safety, however I am sure with modern technology, a newly designed clean air-cooled engine and features such as airbags, power steering could be installed without changing the traditional shape and internal layout. I know they have modern VW transporters but hey just aint the same as the good old retro ones. This van is a classic vehicle that most people love and I'm sure if VW in Germany started putting it into production again with these modifications it would be a best seller!

    It wasn't a popular car at all. It never sold in huge numbers like most VW's did. It might be an iconic vehicle but it wasn't popular. They would lose money if they remade it

Actually, VW never built their own camper van. They were built by custom conversion shops, much the same as stretched limousines are made in the USA today. The most popular VW camper conversion van was made by Westfalia-Werke, which was an independent company in western Germany. There are several reasons why VW no longer imports camper vans to the USA. One big issue is the cost. You can buy a fully equipped, US Built class B motor home for nearly the same price as a VW conversion on today's market. Another is that a major share of the Westfalia company was sold to Daimler-Chrysler in the late 1990's, and that pretty much ended Westfalia's relationship with VW. Westfalia filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

People would still prefer the old ones. Same reason they don't remake the coupe de ville from the 50-60s. And they seek out the vw vans because they are a rarity. If they still work you'd be lucky to find one for sale.

thats probably not a good idea: vw tried it with the beetle. it was sh. t. it was also tried with the mini, that was even worse. not to mention landrover. have you seen the new prototype defenders due to be put into production shortly? shocking. car manufacturers dont seem to understand what makes a particular vehicle popular, and they inevitably balls it up.

i have received literature from Volkswagen,that shows the new bus that will be in show rooms soon.it is not the same but they are aware of the desire.p.s.the van that they sell now is a dodge caravan witha v.w.logo slapped on it.
