Why does Garmin GPS map updates take so long?

I have a Garmin 2300LM 4.3 GPS w/Lifetime maps; I'm wondering why the maps updates take 6 hours to download and also, is there a way to just download the maps I need? The updater does not tell you the file sizes, but I'm guessing it's in the gigabytes...It seems as if all the "map files" are being overwritten each time I update instead of just giving me the ones I need, or is that just how Garmin updates work? You would think since my Garmin is hooked up to my pc and detected, etc. during this process, that it would know what files I need and not have to download so much. Thanks for any help!

The files are very large and it also is depending on how fast your downloading speed is on your computer.
