Self-serve is allowed in New York, it is up to the station. In New Jersey, the law states service is to be given by pump attendants. I bet insurance for a station costs less in New Jersey. Plus, that makes more jobs for students saving to go to college. I believe there is only one other state mandating pump service, that being Oregon. Pump service employees in New Jersey take a safety course on handling gasoline, most motorists treat the volatile, poisonous, and flammable fluid with no more respect than water.

NO self service in NJ/NY? I find that very hard to believe. Hypothetically speaking though, stations charge more for full service. I just researched this, and it's not NJ/NY, it's NJ/Oregon. I'm still surprised there are ANY states that do this! http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0DE5DF173FF937A35757C0A9669C8B63

Ya know, I live in utah, and I went to NY and NJ not to long ago, i thought it was the weirdest thing when they pumped our gas, cool... but I have no idea why... I guess there are more people out in that area who are unemployed, that doing stupid jobs like that, helps out? I dont know? haha

Only in NJ. The mob controls the gas pumpers union and runs the state legislature and that's why there's no self service.

Only New Jersey and Oregon, AFAIK, have no-self-service laws. I was surprised when I learned that Oregon did not have self-service, as I was born and grew up there and we frequently patronized a service station/grocery store near a small town where (almost) everyone pumped their own gas (illegally, of course, though I didn't know it at the time). Once in a while the clerk at the store would have to go out and pump someone's gas for them, which obviously seemed weird. I don't know what the laws are in New York City, but I would assume that New York State does permit self-service.

just about all our stations are self serve. as they need fewer employees. one to take money and watch for drive offs.

So you can't steal gas so easily, Lol.

I dunno but my guess is because its so dangerous in New York that people prefer to play it safe, as for New Jersey.... well what can i say.... ITS NEW JERSEY! lmao just kidding
