When I drove through Iran whilst the Shah was still in power in 1970, we were paying 4 US cents for an Imperial Gallon, or 3.33c/US Gal. Our little Mark 1 Cortina had an 8 gallon fuel tank, and I thought it was just unbelievable that we paid 30c to fill it up. The pound was valued at $2.52 at the time, and it worked out to be 2s6d all up when back in England we were paying 7 shillings a gallon.

I think gas was around $.56 a gallon when I started driving back in 1975.
