What does high offset mean?

On the subject of wheels... What does the offset number reflect? What does it mean?

  • I have a '90 Ford 1/2 ton 4x4 and I'm running 15" wheels, they meet the body line, does offset mean that they will make the tire protrude past the body line? And, if so, what do the numbers represent... for example; 15" wheel, offset 19. What does that mean?

  • Answer:

there is no way youve got a 19 inch offset wheel. if you have a wheel, and want to know what the offset is, lay it face down on the floor. lay a straight edge across the(now) top edge of the wheel. not the tire, the wheel. measure from the wheel flange(the part that goes up against the brake rotor or drum) straight up, to the edge of the straight edge. that measurement is the offset.

the offset is measured from the back of the wheel to the bolt face.typical ford rear drive would be about 4 inch off set,the lower the number the farther out the wheel the higher the number the further in the wheel sits.
