Moving to Warm Weather?

What changes should I make to my car for moving from hot weather in florida to cold weather in illinois?

  • I drive a 1995 BMW 325i and I am moving to Illinois from Miami Florida. I need to know what changes I need to make to my engine and fluids to be able to have the car survive the winter (i.e. antifreeze, oil, etc.).

  • Answer:

You named them. Antifreeze and lower viscosity oil. But not until winter.

Change to a lighter motor oil

change oil using the recommended weight, flush and change radiator fluid and you should be good.

Michael B

just antifreeze and maybe a thicker oil when you change your oil.

It's still summer but a thicker oil, and antifreeze that has less water in it. I grew up in the Rockies and I would use 80% coolant and 20% water because it would be less likely to freeze overnight. That and watch your tire pressure, if it is icy, obviously you don't want your tires with too much pressure and more surface area but with cold weather, air doesn't expand as much. When you get there, ask auto part places what they recommend and what they sell the most of! I drove fine there with my 98 eclipse gst and 92 blaser s10!

Have all the seals checked (ie door seals) to make sure that warm air isn't getting out, cold isn't getting in, etc. Also get your heater checked to make sure it works well. I used to live in Michigan. It gets COLD!!!!!!!! Many car service places have "winterization" offers where they go over everything that is needed to prepare your car for the winter.

kiss it good by they salt the roads up there .. your car will rust out .and then blow away in the wind

Get it under-sprayed before winter to protect from rust. Should cost less than $100. I got a german car, and I live in Canada, so I know what I'm talking about. This service might not be available in FL, but it will be in IL. Check your tires too, and if they're Summer/performance tires get them changed to all-season, or even snow tires. Lastly, if you have never driven in winter conditions, educate yourself on how it's done safely.
