Is it ok to downshift when i race?

Is it ok to downshift automatic transmission when going down hill?

  • Is it ok to downshift an automatic transmission when going downhill? This is a 2008 Camry. Some people say its what you should be doing and others say it will mess up your transmission. Was just curious and I know brakes cost less than transmission so no need to tell me that.

  • Answer:

You need to be doing less then the down shift point to perform this action! So brake till the transmission down shifts and then reset the selector to lock the transmission in a lower gear. This will prevent most of the damage that could be done and makes it possible in most cases to down shift the automatic. Most automatic transmissions will not just slam into a lower gear at the flick of the lever any way. But if you brake till it does down shift that action will let the transmission choose a safe speed at which to do so.
