How are taxi fares calculated?

Any strategies on how to save $ on taxi cab fares in general? (i.e. sharing a taxi)?

  • In general means for any city. Just general strategies on how to pay less for taxi cab rides.

  • Answer:

    Ask the cabby to quote you a "flat rate". If the traffic is jammed, get out and walk....once the taxi goes below 12 miles an hour, a clock takes over the meter and you are paying for time. cabbies pay thier bosses a percentage of what is on the meter...lets say it looks like the meter is going to hit 14.00....make a deal with the cabby, tell him to kill the meter at 10.00 and you will give him 13. You save a buck and he gets a 30% tip. If its a short trip, say a 7$ ride, if the cabby is having a slow day he will be happy to take you "off the meter" for 5$ cabbies like to deal...be respectful, and try not to give the idea that you are trying to cheat him...we aint stupid, ya know.

Dont let them see how expensive the place is you just came out of.Better yet,take the bus or subway.

Walk a little further towards your destination before you catch a taxi. I think they charge by the 1/8 of a mile. Try the bus, then walk the rest of the way.

get out when in walking distance especially if you in lets say new york and your stop is two blocks up but you have traffic and lights to contend with

Get out a few block early and walk a bit.. It is also good exercise..... Buy a bike and store it somewhere at the half way point of your trip, or if it is short enough, ride the bike all the way..opting for the cab on those lazy days.. Good Luck and Peace to you and Yours
