Can you put these automotive terms in layman's terms?
-
The question is self explanatory. Please break these down for me as best you can. I have come across these terms in my search for a used car and all of this automotive jargon that I've been hearing is like a different language to me. - a car that is described as "v6 3.4L ram air induction" -"aftermarket fiberglass functional ram air induction hood" - borla exhaust (I know what an exhaust is but my main question regarding this is: are these exhausts noisy and rumbly? I hear that they're great exhausts, but I'm concerned about the noise factor) What do these terms mean?? Please no links, just those of you who can break this down for me yourself. Thanks in advance!

Answer:
"v6 3.4L ram air induction" - V6 3.4L: it has 6 cylinders (V simply means 3 cylinders on one side, 3 on the other. Some engines are i6 (i stands for inline). All 6 cylinders are in one line). 3.4liters is the size of each cylinder. To give you an idea of how big 3.4 is... most Honda / Toyota economy cars range from 1.6 - 2.2 liter engines. Bigger motors found in lets say a mustang v8 can get to 5.0liters. - Ram Air induction: It's just a name of a company who designs aftermarket Intake systems. An intake is simply a Tube with a filter that the engine uses to suck in air... nothing really that complicated of an upgrade. "aftermarket fiberglass functional ram air induction hood" This is a little hood scope, it is basically a modification the owner made that allows the RAM AIR intake to suck in air - to make things simpler, a hole the guy cut to allow the tube to suck in air, which he made out of fiberglass. Borla exhaust: This is subjective as far as how it sounds... if we're talking normal people who have zero interest in cars, it's loud. People who are car enthusiast will say that the borla exhuast sounds nice. - my opinion, Borla is a good name brand I am assuming you are looking to buy this car. The upgrades the guy did on this car is very basic and did not change that much that may affect the engines life.

v6 is a description of a car engine 3.1 is the size of the engine or 3.1 liter (small v6 ) the ram air induction refers to a hood scoop that actually is hooked up to the air intake and forces outside air into the air intake for the car. This would be considered a high performance enhancement. Something a kid would love that I would run like hell from in a used car (most used high performance cars are whipped mercilessly for life then thrown away) someone bought a aftermarket fiberglass hood and made it part of the air filter assembly into the fuel injection ( more high performance ) /Borla exhaust is a exhaust system made by a high end racing company who specializes in tuned exhausts once again to help make horsepower. So the intake crams air into the engine and the exhaust helps take it away what this does on actuall fact is take a small engine and make it almost a certianty that its a lot easier to blow up later dosn the road with overkill on expensive aftermarket high performance parts. and a waste of time and money I might add as I have stock v8 that can blow doors off these sewing machine motors easily.

Ram air forces air into the intake on the car, in this case through a fiberglass hood scoop. A V6 engine is very common, in this case a 6 cylinder with 3 cylinders per side in the form of a V. Chances are the exhaust will be louder than stock as it sounds like a high performance exhaust.
