How can I renew the photo and remove points from my UK Driving Licence at the same time?
-
I have received a letter from DVLA requesting me to renew the photo on my driving licence by 1 March 2012 (10 years since I had the licence). And yet I already wanted to renew my licence on 21 April 2012 when I am eligible for removal of all my penalty points (will be 4 years since the last offence). DVLA charges for both operations. Is there any way I could have these two done in one go to reduce the cost and hassle? (e.g. renew photo 52 days later than requested by DVLA or ask DVLA to remove all my points already on 1 March) Which solution would be possible and legal?

Answer:
If you do not renew your photocard driving licence before March 1st, it will be illegal for you to drive. The D.V.L.A. will not remove points from your driving licence before 21st April, under any circumstances. The only possible and legal solution is this: Send your licence away before March 1st to get the photo updated. Send it away again after 21st April, to get the points removed. There is no alternative. The D.V.L.A. don't give leeway for anything.

You will HAVE to send your licence off and for renewal BY 1 March (it's the photo that needs the renewal), and there is no way the DVLA will remove points early. They will remove any expired points, but just because they're on the paper part, they do still expire so unless you really are that OCD about an "untidy" paper part, I'd just leave it until next time it's due for renewal.
Yes, it's is technically illegal to drive with an expired photocard as this invalidates your licence. but if you're willing to take the risk of driving for a 6 weeks with an out of date photo card, then you can renew in mid-April and have the points taken off at the same time. Keep in mind that If you're stopped by police and your photocard has expired, at the very least you will have your car seized, and you may be prosecuted in court. If you renew your photocard now, then the DVLA won't remove your points for certain, but why the urgency to have them taken off anyway? The safest option (and legal) option is to pay the renewal fee now, then wait a few months before applying to have your points removed,
