What do I need to ride a moped in the UK?

Need backup plan: rent a car, buy used moped, ask for a ride?

• My car was declared totaled after a tree fell on it during a storm .. that was in december. Some people have been giving me crap about how I still dont have wheels and its beginning to affect my chances with work and whatnot. -insurance limited our budget so finding a used car that wont crap out in a year has been harder to find that you'd think. Im limited in wher I can look, so my parents are looking down where they live and even still they havent found anything worth what we can afford. ANYWAY a friend that has an extra car said he would let me use it if I fixed up what was needed: battery, oil change, depending on how long i used it tires too.. He gave me a 4 month window. BUT understandably enough Ive been put on teh back burner with getting it to the shop to get things rolling because they need to call a towing company. A new job im hoping to get asked me to come in on tuesday and I have a feeling his car isnt an option. Should I rent a car for a day? Buy a used junk vespa to hold me over and in turn forget about fixing up my friends car. just use the moped until i can get a car (in the end the end both will be around $200's) or jsut bite the bullet and ask for a ride and hope maybe next week the car will get in the G*D shop. Im afraid to ask for a ride mainly because even though Ive held up well not asking (much... maybe two or three times - I usually just walk everywhere) the guys have really been getting on my case about not getting my car situation in order. -they really dont understand the situation.. or get up really really early and try to figure out the bus and ride the bus part of the way and ride my bike the rest. (the bus system here is pretty un reliable. a 20 min walk can take 45-90 min ride. and I need to go much farther than my normal 20-40 min walk to distances.
