Driving Lessons and Driving Instructors?

Can driving instructors charge you for missing lessons? and how long will it take to learn to drive?

  • the day i was supposed to have a driving lesson i phoned my instructor to cancel it because i was ill. the problem is that she says she's going to charge me the money since i didn't give her enough notice (i was feeling fine the previous day). can she do this? i thinks its harsh shes charging me, someones reccommended that i just change driving instructors but thats also harsh, what should i do? also along the theme of driving how long does it take people to pass?

  • Answer:

Yes, the school can charge you for not cancelling in advance, if that is in their policies. You can change instructors if you want, but make sure to completely withdraw from the school if you go to a different driving school. As to passing your driving test, I would recommend that you practice a lot with your parents or someone over the age of supervision with your permit. Most driving schools do not cover all the practice hours. Many states have a minimum length of permit holding time and/or a certain number of practice hours required before one can take their driving test (this varies by state). I would recommend at least 75-100 hours of practice under different conditions (day, night, good weather, rain, etc) as well as different types of driving (parking lots, slow streets, faster streets, traffic, freeway, etc) before attempting to take your test. Once you take your test, many states impose restrictions after you get your license during your first six months to a year in terms of the number of passengers allowed and/or the times of day you are allowed to drive in (actual restrictions vary by state).

The driving school you are going to has it's rules and either follow them or go somewhere else; maybe you can get a reduced fee for washing her car or something like that..for passing the class, everyone is different; the instructor can tell you better :} PS a note from a Dr. will help for that one day

What does the contract say? It should be stated in the document the procedure to cancel a lesson. When you say "pass," do you mean the drivng test for a license? I would hope that for the money you are spending for lessons that the instructor will not just let you take the state test without being fully prepared to get things right the first time. That's good for business...and great for you!

How is it harsh that she charges you? She allotted a certain time to give you a lesson and then you called in saying you couldn't be there, the day of by the sounds of it only a few hours prior. If you had let her know sooner she could have filled that time with another lesson, so you're making her lose money by being inconsiderate of her work. Whether you were feeling fine the day before or not doesn't matter, if you had called her at the start of her workday or even before (on her cell) then there wouldn't have been a problem, but clearly you didn't do that. Time is money, and you wasted her time.
