i am a class 1 driver and the theory side of it is a lot harder than the car theory and the driveing test of it is a little bit harder because they ask you questions on about the lorry and they try to trick you to go down road which are unsuitable for the lorry for eg low bridges and narrow road because you have to keep reading the signs so when they say turn left and the last sign has said low bridge you dont turn and you tell him why you didnt turn but when you go to the drivers school all this would be explained to you good luck and hope to see you on the road

you have not said which class of h.g.v you intend to go for class 3 class 2 or class 1 but i can tell you the test for class 1 is quite hard but if you listen to your instructor and they will teach you trust me i understand the test and lessons are expensive so i wish you the best of luck

A class 2 is not that difficult, The test consists of a theory 1st, then the practical where u do a reversing exercise( you reverse across a set area into a bay) , then you do a controlled stop (emergency) then a 40min drive which is similar to a car test, hill start, gear exercise(drive in each gear, up, then dwn the box) . The Class 1 is a bit harder.. the test is exactly the same but obviously the reverse exercise is more difficult because the vehicle bends..and because of its size the driving is a bit trickier.. BIT OF ADVICE.... When/if you go for a class 1, pik a driving school that uses proper artics,,, not a rigid with a trailer(wagon & drag) , because artics are easier to manouvre and wen u pass your more likely to be driving artics

like all tests some people find them harder than others, but its much more stringent than a car test (as it should be) the part most people fail is the reversing on the c+e (old class 1 or articulated) so try to get as much practise as you can reversing trailers it all helps. There is a steep learning curve and you never stop learning, i know of drivers of 25 yrs who still practise! Like the other answers i say its very expensive most schools seem to charge over £1000 for a weeks course these days pass or fail. And you could find it hard to get a job with no experience even after the outlay although most drivers are happy with there job and never want to change so it cant be that bad can it? Best of luck
