Whats The Best Diesel Exhaust?

Whats the difference between #2 Diesel fuel and Farm Diesel Fuel?

  • I think # 2 Diesel is the petro-diesel that you can get at your truck stop and so is your biodiesel. But i can't find information on the farm grade diesel fuel. There can't be that much of a difference in the tractor diesel engine when compared to your Cummins/Duramax. Because all diesels rely on compression-ignition to run.

  • Answer:

Except for very cold areas, all diesel in the US is ASTM #2 Diesel, including farm diesel. On-highway fuel must be low sulfur and be undyed to show that it was taxed. Farm Diesel or Off Road Diesel will contain red dye to show it was not taxed (state & federal highway excise taxes) and may have a higher sulfur content than is allowed for on-road use.

All about sulfer.... Affects wear, deposits, and particulate emissions. Diesel fuels contain varying amounts of various sulfur compounds which increase oil acidity. Legislation has reduced the sulfur content of highway fuel to 0.05% by weight. Off road fuel has an average of 0.29% sulfur by weight. Farm grade diesel is hard on light truck engines. And very noticable if burning farm fuel. Makes for a wonderful mosquito killer! Don't get caught burning farm fuel on the hiway.... unless you like paying the government. (and dont think they won't pull over the light trucks and test your fuel!)

The only difference is Farm Diesel Fuel has red dye in it and there is no road tax on it. Many farmers use it in thier trucks and all thier farm equipment.

farm diesel is dyed red , Not for street use the road use tax is waived (it is much cheaper) The cops can pull a sample of your fuel to see if you paid your road use tax. sometimes has more sulfer engines last longer

The big difference is #2 diesel meets all the federal regulations for pollution. This grade is sold at a higher price. The farm diesel is not regulated to be as clean burning. It is also illegal for an over the road truck to use this fuel. But many truckers buy it because of the significant discount
