What are some tips for me to pass my road test?

  • I have my road test in about a month and I am a good driver but theres still a chance I could fail my road test and I can't do that because I have no way of getting to school. So I'm going to work really hard to pass. Does anyone have any hints and tips for me? What does the inspector like to see? What do they don't like?

  • Answer:

I am an examiner (we don't inspect much) and I can tell you some of the things we look for. Make complete stops behind stop lines. Use turn lanes when they are provided. Know when you have the right-of-way and take it when you have it. Check for blind spots, if you don't know what a blind spot is, find out before you test. Don't rely on your mirrors alone, quick glances over your shoulder when you are backing is good. We don't like suck-ups, regardless of what your friends say. If we want to make small talk we will but don't be overly friendly it makes us think you have something to hide and are trying to distract us. And the main thing is...breathe. If you have a good examiner they will make you feel comfortable and at ease. Good Luck!

No offense, but a lot of new drivers think they are "good" but they are the ones who have the highest rate of accidents. Not to ruin your confidence now, I only mean to make you analyze your skill. Nothing beats out right practice. When you are smooth and confident, it tells the examiner you are accomplished and skilled. Especially watch that you leave room when turning left for another car to make a right turn without being too close. Keep your head and eyes moving left to right so the examiner knows you are attentive. Stay centered in your lane, that shows you have good depth perception and reflexes. Use the turn signal well before any turns. Be certain to make a full, COMPLETE stop at all stop signs and signals. Practice accelerating smoothly without jerks. Snappy acceleration tells the testor you are a hot rodder when no one is looking. When you sit down in the car, make a point of touching the mirror even if you know it is correctly adusted. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE......

Always pay attention, and put your seatbelt on as soon as you get into the vehicle otherwise you will automatically fail.

Practice, Practice, Practice Parking - practice (all the different ways) Do you have a parent or relative that will be willing to play the role of 'devil's advocate' with you? Have that person ride with you and test you on city streets, neighborhoods, highway, interstate - different times a day so you can experience different traffic conditions. The best tip I can give you is to first think positively (but not 'cocky'), practice - ensure you follow the rules in the booklet. Talk to someone who has taken the test recently (in the past year) and ask them what the road test involved - and practice that and other things.
