What are the chances for the fuel to catch fire if someone doesn't turn off the engine while refueling?
-
I'm instructed to turn off my engine while refueling. I understand that this is to reduce the chances of the fuel to catch fire due to static electricity. My question, what are the chances for that to happen? Are these chances lower or higher than the chances of someone getting killed while driving to the gas station due to a car accident?

Answer:
The odds are VERY low, but why take that chance? I have worn a seatbelt in all of my forty plus years of driving but have never needed it. And yet, I WILL continue to always wear it, no matter what the odds may or may not be of my EVER needing its protection. With automobile safety, I NEVER play with the odds. I stack them in my favor in every way I can.

Static electricity has nothing to do with whether your engine is running or not.All gas tanks have a vent that emits fumes to the outside of the tank and can spread to the engine area of the car. With the engine running, there is a chance that you can have an arc from part of the ignition system which will ignite the fumes. The filling system such as the nozzle and also the filler spout of the tank is made of non Spark metal so as to eliminate the problem at that end of the vehicle. The chances of a fire while driving a vehicle after an accident is far greater than refueling with the engine running.I have seen vehicles catch fire after an accident, but never while refueling.

Lower. But the chances of causing more damage, and more serious injury to more people, might be higher. I have no scientific evidence to support that opinion,.
