Turning right into a right-turn-only lane when going straight through intersection?

  • I have my Learner's license and I ran into a situation today that even stumped my step-dad. I had to turn right from a side-street onto a busier street. However the lane I was turning in to (the right lane obviously) immediately turned into a right-turn-only lane at the upcoming intersection, which was about 40-50 feet up. There was a very short distance (for a newbie) to switch to the left lane in order to go straight through the intersection. In that case when I turned, is it legal to complete my turn in the left lane? Later on in my drive I noticed that other cars did this at a very busy 3-lane intersection. There was only about 20 feet for them to merge into the left lanes and all of them did so AS they turned rather than turning into the right lane (which was right-turn-only at the intersection). So ... turning right into a short right-hand-turn lane, if I need to go straight through the intersection, do I turn into the left lane? Or really quickly try and merge to the left after turning and hope for the best?

  • Answer:

Although it's done by a lot of people, it's technically illegal to switch lanes while you are in the intersection.

A right turn lane is not considered a normal traffic lane. The turn should be into the right-most normal traffic lane. You could not legally turn into the turn lane then quickly change lanes due to the requirement to maintain your position in the lane for a specified distance per statute.
