What is the weight of a Ford Ranger?

2003 Ford Ranger Edge: How much temporary weight should I add for better traction?

  • Thanks to those who recommended temporary weight be placed over the rear axle. Any suggestions regarding how much weight would be most beneficial? I don't mind giving up mpg for traction. Just asking for a best guess or experience for least weight = most improved traction. 100, 200 maybe 300 lbs? More? Thanks to all again.

  • Answer:

I have a Ford F150, and I put a sand bag in each corner of the box (back corners). Each bag weighs approximately 60 lbs. That is more than adequate for traction. A few words of caution....if you put the weight in the rear corners, like I did (behind the axle) you don't need as much as if you put right on the axle (leverage factor). Be careful not to put too much weight there, as it could take weight off the steering axle, and you don't want that.. As well, be sure to secure the weights properly, in case of an accident. Hope this helps.
