Ohio car seat laws in Ohio?

  • what are the laws of having three car seats in your car? I have a 4 door car and i am thinking that I am going to have to get another car! I have a three year old & I am pregnant with twins. Thanks!

  • Answer:

You never mentioned what type or year of car you have, but you might have a third seatbelt in the backseat.Try checking under the seat.Sometimes they get pushed into or under the seat because they are seldom used.Hey,it doesnt cost anything to look. The seatbelt law is nationwide I believe so If you dont want your 3 y/old in the front seat, then find that rear seatbelt or start saving for a newer or larger car.Good Luck and Congrats on the twins!!!!!!

You don't say what kind of car you have, but most likely you can fit 3 across in the back seat, just may take some figuring. :) It depends more upon the type of car seats than the car. I've seen 3 seats across in a tiny 2 door cavalier! The narrowest convertible (rear facing and forward facing ) car seat I think I've seen is the Sunshine Kids Radian, plus it's a GREAT seat b/c it will keep the child harnessed up to 80lbs, where most seats only go to 40lbs. with the internal harness. I have to say it's a bit of trial and error, and measuring. Also, check the car seat compatibility database below, and the car seat measurement site, they'll both help you. There's also a link to a car seat forum where 3-across is discussed frequently, and you could post your question there, where you'll get answers from some CPSTs (child passenger safety technicians). It really depends upon the type of child seats you buy, how many you need forward facing./rear facing/booster. TIP: kids should stay rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! 12 months/20lbs is the bare minimum for turning them around and how many of us want to do only the minimum for our kids? They are safest rear facing so keep them that way to the height/weight limit of their seats (30-35lbs. depending upon the brand). TIP: kids should stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. Most 4 year olds are not ready to be put in a belt positioning booster yet, so look for seats that the harness can be used past 40lbs. Be careful! Lots of seats SAY 22-100lbs, but what they really mean is that you use the harness 22-40lbs and then use as a belt positioning booster until 100lbs.

If your 3-year-old rides in front, make sure there isn't an airbag, or make sure it's turned off. The twins should ride in back. Probably be better off with a minivan.
