Driving instructors, is this standard practice, to hop back and forth between auto and manual in ten lessons?
-
Is my driving instructor for real? I asked for MANUAL, not AUTOMATIC. He brought a manual car, for the first lesson. No prob. Then he turned around, told me that he would be bringing an automatic car for me, so I would get used to steering and speed. Then once I get the hang of this, then he would bring back the manual car. Hmm, anyway for the 2nd lesson, he brought an automatic car. I was staring at two pedals, not having a clue. He told me to drive on. I had to tell him to explain the pedals to me, before we could do the lesson on turning corners. I would prefer to practice the manual gear stick all the time. He claims I'm not safe. Of course I'm not safe, as I am a rank beginner. Yet other rank beginners are allowed to use manual gear sticks? I'd like to know what people think. Thanks.

Answer:
This is absolute rubbish you don't need to use an automatic to get used to steering or speed as manual or automatic these things will be the same you are paying them to teach you everything and that includes the gears. For maybe 2 or 3 lessons your instructor should be taking you to a quiet car park/housing estate anyway and at no point should they be saying you are not safe as you already point out you are a beginner and they should respect that I wouldn't have another lesson with this instructor as it is just making learning to drive more complicated by changing cars and it is said by most instructors it is easier to pass in a manual and change to an automatic (if you want to ) but not the other way round and if you are not careful you may end up having to take your test in an automatic with this instructor Good Luck with Driving

Get another instructor, fast! I've never heard of anyone doing this either. This guy is being ridiculously unprofessional, you're PAYING him for driving lessons in a manual car, so if he brings an auto again, refuse to pay and tell him where to go.

Never heard of this. I would tell him: I want to learn to drive a manual car - I am paying you to teach me that not to drive an automatic. I would then tell him that you are sure you will be able to find someone who will do what you are paying them for and part company.

I never heard of swapping from manual to automatic during lessons. In the UK learners decide if they want to get a full licence or an automatic licence and then take lessons accordingly. I'd be tempted to find a new instructor. Good luck with your test x

Sounds like he is just doing what he wants to do. I think he has two cars one auto and one manual. The day of your lesson he is just bringing whatever he is working in for that day. Its outrages, sack him and get a better instructor immediately. You booked Manual lessons and that is all yu should pay for, don't let him offer to use manual from now on. He has messed you about from the beginning, get rid while you can. Hope this helps Driving Instructor

I've never heard of this before , maybe its a new technique(his own) or he's just trying to con you . Either way , find a new driving school or teacher . You need to have faith in your teacher ,especially for driving , as what you are learning should stay forever .

Is this guy a qualified ADI? Does he have a green badge in his car window. If not do not pay him and report him to the police/ DSA. Whatever find yourself a new driving instructor immediately.

I am not a driving instructor but have never heard that before. No matter how bad or unsafe your driving a good instructor will always be able to give you a lesson in a manual car.
Trust Me
If you require someone to explain the function of two pedals ( 1 for STOP; 1 for GO) on the floor I fear that your driving instructor has genuine cause for concern as to your ability to drive a manual. As such I believe that he is correct in issuing you an automatic for the first few driving lessons.

change your instructor you need to learn to steer and change gears at the same time all hes going to do is confuse you and you will end taking a lot longer to learn. No learner driver is safe when you first start to learn that's where a good instructor teach you to be safe
