What is a good bike light for riding at night?

Is it required by law, that you need a light for your bike when riding at night?

  • My friend said I need one, but I'm not sure, because they cost alot of money. I usually bike on the sidewalk at night, but I'm afraid that I'm still gonna get pulled over.

  • Answer:

In California, it IS required. You can get a fairly cheap set of lights at many dollar stores. I used to use one that clipped to my arm or leg, that shone a white light forward and a red lignt to the back. Ran on a couple of C cell battteries. California also requires red reflectors toward the rear and white or yellow reflectors (usually in the spokes) to the sides. By the way, in California, you can get pulled over for riding on the sidewalk.

Lighting Regulations Abbreviated to RVLR: the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 (amended in 1994 and 2005) require pedal cycles to have various lights and reflectors fitted, clean and working properly, when being ridden on a public road between sunset and sunrise. Cyclists may also be required to light up in conditions of seriously reduced visibility during the day, but only if they have functional lights already fitted. Lights are not required when the cycle is stationary or being pushed along the roadside. It has to be said that the fine details of RVLR are seldom enforced; and provided you show some kind of white light in front and red reflector behind you are unlikely to be challenged. If you are involved in a night-time accident however, any slight illegality with respect to your lights or reflectors may be regarded as contributory negligence in a lawsuit.

Your friend is right about needing one. The law has nothing to do with it get the light for your own protection i believe its called common sense.

get a flashlight and duct tape it or like a 5 dollar blinking red light to put on your back from walmart. it's for your safety cause you're invisible at night. and here in california, yes it is required.

It depends on the state you live in - here in IL it is required so that other vehicles can see you.

Yes you need a white headlight and a red tail light. You can often use a flashing headlight and/or tail light but this can vary. I also recommend light coloured or reflective clothing.

I don't know who would pull you over, but it would be a good idea to have a lite on the bike.

If I were you I would get worry about being hit by another vehicle, or you hitting a pedestrian on the sidewalk. To avoid the possibility of bigger consequences you better get the light. It is for your own safety and others.
