What are some different types of barriers you could use to block road pollution from getting into water?

I'm doing my science project on how different types of barriers will affect the amount of water pollution that will get into bodies of water. They only barriers I've come up with so far are carpet, hair, and grass/hay. What are some other barriers I could test? And if possible, could you give me a website about the barrier(s) you suggested.
