How old, or what weight does a child have to be to be able to use a backless booster seat for a car?
-
My daughter is going to be 6 January 28th and she weighs about 30-35 pounds. She is real petite and small. I have a booster seat for her with the high back. I was wondering how old she has to be or how much she has to wiegh to be able to use a booster seat without a back on it. I live in North Carolina

Answer:
Not sure if this answers your question entirely, but it is the NHTSA recommendation. Until a child is 4-feet 9-inches tall, he or she should be placed in a booster or child safety seat, not in a safety belt. Children between 20 and 40 pounds should be in forward-facing child safety seats or convertible child safety seats once they are more than a year old. Children over 40 pounds should use belt-positioning booster seats, which ensure the safety belt is positioned correctly on their body, until they are at least 8 years old or 4-feet 9-inches tall.

If she is still small for her age, as you indicated, you may want to keep her in a forward-facing child seat with the 5 point harness, if the seat manufacturer recommends it for the weight and height of your child. Many seats are now rated for higher weights, and keeping the child in the harness until they reach the upper weight limit is usually recommended. Check the child safety seat owner's manual, or the information stickers on the sides of the seat itself, for the upper weight limits. Or, buy a new seat that has higher weight limits. If you get a seat that converts to a high back booster seat after the child has outgrown the harness, then you can get greater use out of the seat. Always check the booklet that came with the seat for correct usage, weight limits, etc. Another option is to go to a free child safety seat inspection station and ask them to help you decide what seat is a good fit for your child. Go to nhtsa.dot.gov website and click on CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY SEAT INSPECTION STATIONS (locate by your state or zip code).
