What did you have to do for your driver's test?

At what age should drivers be made to re-take a road test and at what frequency years following that?

  • I'm writting a paper on elderly drivers and if it should become maditory to re-take road tests. The purpose of my paper is not to discriminate against the elderly. Personally I am in favor of re-tests starting from when a driver first gets their license; slowly increasing in frequency as they get older to account for the potential decrease in cognative abilities. Also maditory re-tests in cases relating to frequent accedents and violations at any age. Finally having a limits set on certain elderly drivers similar to graduated licensing. This would insure that elderly drivers who aren't perfectly healthy can still drive and keep their independence while accomidating for certain deficiancies. ie.) May only drive at night, or not during rush hour. I know that soley classifing people based on their age group is inappropriat, and so should you. If your going to answer don't be like (old people shouldn't drive 'cause they're senile) not all old people are senile and it is a proven fact that healthy senoir citizens are safer drivers than any other age group. What do you think? Please be civil I don't need this getting out of hand

    I believe that all drivers should be retested at the expiration of their license periods. It seems that as soon as your license is given to you, that all the safety rules are forgotten. You never learned to tailgate, or speed, or weave in traffic when you were being taught. This applies to all drivers.

As an initial measure, I would suggest at age 85 years, then annually thereafter. That should put a few thousand off the road. Regular stop/checks for eyesight tests, at any age, should be made. That would put even more off the road.

I think there should be a written test for road rules every two years after obtaining a license and a physical driving test after 5 years.

For years i recommended every driver take a medical then retest every 5 years professional drivers need a medical.I found out i was diabetic and High Blood pressure this way Why doesn't every one do this.A student driver had a heart attack on the road test and died at the wheel One of my students was on medication .She told DMV no medical problems We refused her further lessons After 65 retest yearly DMV says to costly ?

16, then every year after that until 25. Immediately after an at-fault accident, no matter what age. Immediately after receiving a 3rd moving violation in a 2 year period, no matter what age. Then, the rest depends on health. Anybody who is a lousy driver at 60 has always been lousy, just lucky. My aunt was a safe driver until she quit past 90. I had a client who was a safe driver until he died at 94, after an illness. I know of one person who passed a re-test with flying colours at 100 years old. Others, like I say, are bad to start with, nothing to do with age. As far as the health issues go, it is up to family to watch. If they think somebody is getting past it, then they should talk to the doctor for an assessment. It might be something simple like a medication or glasses change, but the doctor can determine that. One is never too old to drive, but it is possible to be too aged, which isn't necessarily the same thing. For those who get their licences after they pass 20, no matter what age, I suggest annual tests for the first 5 years or, if it is after 30, for at least 3 years, before unconditional licence is granted.
