what is transverse intersection of Whitney stratifications?

2 lane to 3 lane intersection, can I change lanes?

  • I know that changing lanes in an intersection (I'm from California) ranges from "looked down upon" to completely illegal, but what I want to know is the case where there are more lanes on the other side of the intersection. For instance, I am in the right lane on a 2-lane street, and pass an intersection, the other side of which has 3 lanes. Is it legal if I take the rightmost lane even though the middle lane is the lane I would get to if I kept going straight? Or, say I was driving on a 1-lane street, cross an intersection, and there are 2 lanes now in my direction. Am I free to choose either lane, or should I stick to only the lane straight in front of me? The reason I ask is because I hate when other drivers behind me immediately change in the intersection to the rightmost lane and make it hard for me to change to that lane. This is something that can be avoided, however, if I chose to change during the intersection.

  • Answer:

Having an extra driving lane open up does not change the rules of the road. If you want to move from your current lane to the new lane, you are required to signal & move over when it's clear. This falls into the category of, "Just b/c others are doing it, doesn't make it right." Stick to road rules & you should avoid accidents or at least be in the right if one were to happen.
