  • Honda Civic, how much does the manual transmission input shaft bearing repair cost? Story: I have a 2002 2door Civic EX (1.7 vtec). The input shaft bearing started making noise a few months ago and I started looking for a mechanic to fix it. I asked around and I got quotes from $800 to $1200. Finally, I decided to leave it with a shop that quoted me $800 not knowing that he was gonna pull out my transmission and send it to a transmission shop. I bought the clutch kit cause once the transmission was out, they could change the clutch too. My mechanic called me a few times and raised the price gradually to $2000 (flywheel reface, transmission seals, engine mount ...) I paid him and picked up the car, but it was bothering me all the time how it came up to $2000. The following is the receipt: Labor: $750 engine mount: 140 Flywheel reface: 90 Transmission repair: $1050 I drove to the transmission shop the other day where he dropped off the transmission for repair and they said "they only changed the input shaft bearing and the seals". I asked for a receipt, but they wouldn't give me and the guy insisted that the $1050 charge is fair. I called around and asked how much it would cost to repair the input shaft bearing if I drop off the transmission and the highest quot I got was $350. Who's lying here? My mechanic or the transmission shop?

    You have a good question but the reality for all of us is that when you contract with a person or a shop to perform some work, then both parties are bound to the specifics of the contract. Even though you have located some cheaper quotes, after the fact, you are still bound to the original contract. Please be aware of the fact that other factors that were not evident before disassembly can drive up the original estimated cost because nobody had a crystal ball nor are they psychic enough to see these things at the onset. If your vehicle had an input shaft bearing go bad, that is usually because of two major reasons. 1. The transmission fluid did not reach the bearing and it ran dry for a prolonged period of time. 2. The transmission to engine relationship was off center and the transmission input shaft was not concentric with the pilot bearing in the flywheel and therefore the input shaft bearing took a major beating. I would bet that number 2 was the most likely culprit and if any clutch or other work was performed in the past, then is is fair chance that the work was suspect. Good Luck

Well what is the shop labor rates you took it to. $350. is good price for the shaft bearing replacement if the tranission is out of the car. If they had to replace the shaft it's self. Then you could look at a $1000. easy out of the car. Flywheel reface is about right at shop. Because it is a two step flywheel and has to be set up to cut each step. Putting in the engine mounts is about right as well. The real reason he would not let you see the transmission shop charge is because it is less than what he charged you. All shops to do this. It is usuall a few dollars more. To cover pick -up and delievely. And a few dollars for fining a shop to do the mechance work. Here is the question what shop had to your trnsmisson to make it servicable. A loose input shaft can do a lot of damagous. This damagous has to be fix. I will give you a example of this using a head. It went to the shop with a cost of $200. dollars. But the shop found other things that had to be address to make head servicable. The shop did not call me as the should had. The head came back with a $1000. price tage on it. I had to tell the customer. But I showed the customer what they had done. That they did not call me about the added repairs. I left it up to customer if he want me to find another head that could used. Sure was not going to use the same shop again. We use the head that came back from the shop. But showed was not make a cent off the out of shops work because was able tell the customer before the work was done with his okay. Other wise would had made 10% on the work. It seem this mechanic is not being fully honest with you as to the repairs to the ttansmission and it cost. I would look for another mechanic.
