99 grand am 3400 will not start easy then when started put in gear it dies why?

hi, I have 99 grand am 188,000 miles, I just bought it with bad head gasket I replaced it my self, the car still have the same issue when I bought it it will take so many tries to start like 10 to 15 times to get it start!! I tried with & without the gas pedal, when I repeatedly & fast bush on the pedal it seems it will start faster then if I wen't slow or didn't touch the pedal. then it started it will ideal fine the low or hi rpm the car sound good, but as soon as I put in gear the car will die. I hear the fuel pump working every time I turn the key on, I put new fuel filter and the fuel regulator pressure was changed 3 times cuz I thought for sure it was it but it's not, if I let the car ideal it will stay on even for half an hour with no problems it doesn't over heat, but something to mention when I bought the car and started it it was blowing white smoke like burned house it was very bad, after I replaced the head/intake gaskets it smoked when it first started then it kept disappearing tel it's not smoking anymore, it took like 5 to 10 minutes to clear the white smoke. also the ignition key looks like for grand prix not for grand am!! could that be it? I disconnected the battery over night it didn't work, did scurrility reset 11 minutes...ect but no luck, I checked all the wires are good, alternator works and it charges, the only light on are, svs, low coolant but it's full!!, also the air bag. that's it. scurrility light does NOT flash, do u know what could be the problem? what would u replace first?thank u

First I'd hook up a scan tool and see what was going on. It could be the Throttle Position Sensor or the MAP sensor or the fuel pressure too low.

you have a bad lock out torque converter and if you unplug the wiring on the top of the transmission and start the car a few times, trying to put it in gear each time, eventually the lock out will release and you will be able to drive your car. The converter is designed to slip while you start you car and then lock up as you get going to give you better gas mileage, but yours is stuck in the lock up position and it kills the engine the second you put it in gear.
