Anyone know whats wrong with my car?
-
My car is a 1999 volvo. its been having some problems lately. Im taking it in as soon as I have the availiable time. I definantly want to know if these issues are serious enough to ger to a shop asap or if I can wait untill next weekend. Okay so first my car jerks sometimes, almost like its having a seizer when I turn the car on. It stays like that until I drive down the street then its fine. Also when Im driving sometimes, as I try to accelerate it feels like my driving over gravel & the whole car shakes. Whenever i slow down too fast to stop, and accelerate again, the car wont just fo itll start to gain speed very slowly. And I lightly touch or remove my foot from the accelerator the car jerks. Can anyone identify these issues please? I will be very grateful.

Answer:
im 99.9% sure that you have a fuel problem. either your fuel pump is bad or your filter is clogged. my car would shake and then barely start or die when i started it and i had the same problem when driving it. it was the fuel pump. its not to much money to fix but you deff need to get it taken care of or eventually your car wont start at all

Sounds like you may have a motor or transmission mount issue. Maybe a vacuum leak, bad EGR valve, bad MAF sensor, etc. As Bluto said, I am just guessing, a mechanic should be able to figure it out. It is surprising your check engine light is not on.

Except for the S80 all the Volvos sold in the US in 1999 used the 5 cylinder engine. Volvo made the valve clearances too tight in that engine so if the car was just used in town the valves would get sticky, leading to hard starting and surging. Prevention included giving the car a run on the highway occasionally, using top tier gasoline brands, and using synthetic oil. Fixing it involves taking it to a place you can drive in second gear at frightening rpm, like 50 mph, for a couple minutes... no fooling! However, your symptoms sound like the main nightmare for Volvos in that era - the Throttle Position Sensor. There was a class action suit about that - see the second source. Unfortunately the window for filing under the suit has closed. Fortunately, you have not experienced the unwanted full throttle accelerations other Volvo owners did.
