What is the difference between AT tires and Light Truck tires?

Putting 185/70/R14 tires on a wheel for 195/70/R14?

  • I have a 1997 Ford Ranger, reg cab, 2WD. When it bought it, it came with 225/70/R14 tires. Factory specs that I could find said it came with 195/70/R14. The wheels seem to be the originals. I have a car with 185/70/R14s on it. They are almost new, and I can't really afford to replace my truck tires right now. Will it be a serious issue if I put these car tires on the Ranger? I know they aren't truck tires, but it's such a light truck. Any advice would really be appreciated. I'm looking at four new tires and a new windshield to pass inspection. Not really in my budget!

Usually you can get away with one side up or down(ie 235 or 215) but you going from 225 to 185 is just too much. I would not do it; very unsafe. Are those original wheels or has it been replaced with a more narrow ones. Meaning they should not have 195 on there in the first place if it should have 225.

No problem fitting the smaller diameter tire to the wheel. They are both 14 inch tires. You may notice that the truck is a little lower to the ground and the speedometer may not be as accurate since the smaller tire turns faster you may be going 55 when the speedo shows 60MPH. Smaller tires will possibly hurt gas mileage a little, but not much. Good to go!

Yes it would be VERY BAD to put those skinny, undersized tires on. They will also ruin your gas mileage. I doubt you could find anyone willing to install them on your truck for liability reasons and I would not trust anyone with so little ethics that they would do it.

Open the drivers door. What does it say you should use for a tire size on the Tire Load and Inflation placard on the door frame? Whatever that says is the correct tire size and inflation for your particular truck.

The sizes are different so i dont even think they will fit in the rim unless your strong enough to stretch out the tire.
