Why won't my Diesel Corsa start?

I have put petrol in my diesel corsa, is this fixable?

  • I have stupidly put 40 pounds of petrol in my diesel Corsa! However i realised while pumping it and so drove away from the pumps about 10 meters to a parking space in the garage. There was no juddering so I'm guessing it didn't get into the pumps. Because i didn't actually drive it (apart from the 10 meters) do i simply need to drain the tank and refill it with diesel and it will be ok? Would appreciate some advice from someone a bit more car savvy than myself :) Cheers, Mark.

  • Answer:

syphon out the petrol and fill with diesel.........it will be fine.

By not using sense and PUSHING it you now face a bill of draining the tank and flushing the whole system.

I did the same with my Rover 75 CDTi a few years ago - I had the tank drained at a cost of £50 and it was OK. Apparently people years ago used to mix a bit of petrol with diesel in winter to stop it freezing.

if you drain it it will be ok. a little left in the tank will not hurt it none.

As you drove it there will be petrol in the fuel delivery system. Your safest bet is to get the AA to visit, drain and purge the system. They have a specialist mobile guy these days. See link. If you try to diy you may damage the HP fuel pump which is a very expensive component.

hi mark ...no probs ..you have done no harm ..just drain it ..and refill ...i can beat your effort ..i put £35 petrol in my van ..which is a diesel ...i then drove it from south of london to the eurotunnel and then never stopped till i was south of paris ...over 300 miles ...when i stopped..it would not start ..tow to renault garage ..drain tank ..change fuel filter ..away again ,,the fuels had not mixed ..what makes it so bad? i own a garage !!..never noticed the black handled pump was not diesel

Your best bet really would have been to have pushed it away from the pump, than got a tow truck to a service garage to drain and flush the tank.

Yes i'd drain your tank and refill it with gas and you should be ok... maybe change your filter. I worked for UPS for years and the drivers would do it all the time.

Should be ok after only 10m,as for advice, yes draining and all that but,the last two I got called out to were AA members and to my suprise they have an operative almost dedicated to this mistake. he came out,did all that was needed and job done, for less than I would have charged!! So,if your a member....if not, time to join.

Q

try to get as much out of the tank you can then fill it back up. it should be fine after what,s in the lines gets burned out.
