How do you attach a rear view mirror?

Will nail polish remover take off the glue to attach a rear view mirror?

  • I recently had the incident of having my rearview mirror fall off the window; and my mistake was attaching it backwards. So now I need to remove it and reattach it, this time the correct way. The only problem is that I can't get it to come off the window now. What is out there that I can use to take it off?

I can't count the number I've had to "un-do" for customers! The easiest way to remove the button (that's what it is called) is to use direct heat from a propane torch. You have to avoid direct contact with the windshield, and just heat the button about 2 or 3 seconds, then use a pair of pliers and a twisting motion and see if it is loose. Heat and try again until the glue fails. Here is a tip; Always use a sharpie marker, or even a pencil and put an arrow on the side of the button which will be away from the glass. The mark will be what you see when you stick it up, and the arrow should point up.

Try acetone

yes, fingernail polish is ascetone based, which can be used to take care of many problems, it will deactivate super glue, remove paint, and thin thickened nail polish just to name a few. if your going to install new glue, clean both glass and mirror tab, it helps to rough up tab, use your nail file, then clean with your nail polish remover, let dry completely, don't wipe after dry, apply button only to glass, use a piece of tape to hold in place, wait 15 min. pull tape, clean excess w/razor blade, install mirror

Try using a stong piece of fishing line or something similar. Cut a length to about 18" and wrap the ends around your fingers (like when you floss your teeth) and then put the line against the window and work it back and forth between the window and the adhesive pad of the mirror. Then clean the sticky residue with WD40 and then windex or go buy something like 'goof off' or 'goo gone' to clean the sticky stuff off. Good luck!

Nail Polish remover (acetone) is most likely not a strong enough to remove it, not to mention it would be hard to get it behind there.. I would suggest trying a blow dryer around the edges to heat up the glue to a point where you can peel it off.. but this would depend on the glue you used..

well you just have to wiggle it till the bond becomes weak enough to break . dont use heat because that will crack your windshield, just have patience and work it till it becomes loose.
