Why my 97 chevy silverado won't shift out of park when the motor is running or when the key is 2/3 of a turn?
-
It only shifts when the key is 1/3 of a turn then I can start it on neutral and then turn it on then shift to D or reverse and it drives just fine, but if I shift it back to park it won't shift out of park again , unless I turn the engine off again and start over again any help?? Thank you

Answer:
It sounds like you have a bad brake switch. The switch controls a safety built into the column, where your foot must be on the brake to shift out of park with the engine running. This prevents accidental movement when shifting from park. When the ignition is in the accessory position, since the engine isn't running, the safety doesn't work since there's little chance of the vehicle moving. Check and see if the brake lights come on when you step on the pedal. If not, then the switch is the most likely culprit. Should be a pretty simple fix.
